A classic Cuban mojito is a simple but refreshing cocktail which traditionally contains just 5 basic ingredients:
- White rum
- Lime juice
- Fresh mint leaves
- Sparkling water
- Sugar cane juice or simple syrup
With such a limited number of ingredients it seems like a relatively easy drink to make. However, there is a potential for things to go very wrong!
The Muddler
The secret to the perfect Mojito is to use only fresh mint and to put a muddler to good use! A muddler is an essential piece of bar equipment which resembles a miniature baseball bat and is used to press, or ‘muddle’ ingredients in the bottom of the mixing glass.
Getting The Right Mix
To create a refreshing Mojito, crush the mint leaves with a muddler to release the flavor, adding one third a teaspoon of sugar and a little lime juice, continuing to muddle until the leaves are thoroughly mashed. Then fill the glass with ice and add white rum, more lime juice and the sparkling water and sugar syrup. Alternatively you can switch out the water and sugar syrup for
7-U p or Sprite.
